✅ Events and sporting matches:
Close to Etihad Stadium and the Crown Casino Complex, my apartment is in a really good location for the Grand Prix too because you’re at one of the main tram stops that takes you to the stadium. It's also very easy to get to the Rod Laver Arena (Australian Tennis Open) and the MCG too.
Best supermarket is Woolworths Metro with BWS liquor next door. It’s at the train station, open 5.30am to 12am. Convenience store called Fresh Pantry downstairs but not as good as Woolworths.
✅ Queen Victoria Market is a 20-minute walk or 2 free trams (East along Collins Street; North up Elizabeth Street). This is fabulous food market has been there since the 1950s. Must see if you’re new to Melbourne; closed on Mondays and Wednesdays.
South Melbourne Market is also good and nearby.
Gloria Jeans coffee downstairs but better coffee is around the corner in the laneway or up at Kinfolk on Bourke St.
Perk-up Café is next door on Collins Street and if you’re there during the morning week day commuter hours, they have cheap lattes ready to go. If you need a donut fix, Krispy Kreme is across the road.
Favourite local restaurant is Higher Ground at 650 Little Bourke Street. Walk North up Spencer Street to almost opposite where the Sky Bus arrives. It’s only a couple of blocks away and is very cool.
Syracuse Restaurant & Wine Bar at 23 Bank Place is an elegant Italian restaurant with polished wood floors.
Cumulus, Chin Chin, The European, Mamasita (hip Mexican), Cellar Bar at Grossi Florentino’s (eat outside on Bourke Street), Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar (Melbourne’s first restaurant and you feel like you stepped back in time into a 1950s local Italian coffee shop, homemade Italian food and cheeky waiters), any Vietnamese restaurant in Victoria Street, Richmond (tram 109 and outside of free city tram zone).
✅ Favourite lunch place in the city – City Wine Shop, 159 Spring Street or anywhere along Southbank on the river on a sunny day.
Siglo rooftop bar, Madame Brussels, The Rooftop at QT, Seamstress, Riverland on a nice day.
✅ Melbourne laneways:
Degraves Street, Centre Place and Block Place. This is a quintessential Melbourne vibe and very cool. Good area to head for weekend brunch.
Catch Sky Bus from the airport directly to the City which leaves every 10 minutes and they make one stop in the city at Southern Cross train station, just across the road from my apartment. It's about $20 each way so If you have more than 2 people, it’s more cost effective to get a taxi or Uber.
Once you get off the bus, walk south down through the train station (trains on your right side). Cross the road at the clock tower towards the Gloria Jeans coffee shop at you’re there.
Interstate train – arrives at Southern Cross train station which is across the road from my apartment.
My apartment is in the free city tram zone which is great for getting around the CBD. Once you leave the free city zone, you will need a Myki card which you pre-load money onto. Swipe off/on trains, trams and buses with the same card and you can get Myki cards from Southern Cross train station over the road. The main Collins Street and Spencer Street tram stops are also right outside the door and take you to St Kilda, Docklands, Port Melbourne, Fitzroy and Collingwood.
Rent a blue Melbourne Bike Share and take a ride down to Port Melbourne along the beach fronts as far as you like. Or head across the river towards the Casino and ride East along the river’s edge towards the MCG.
